When this popped into the inbox we were very excited. The first single release from Icicle’s forthcoming album ‘Entropy‘, set for release in early November on Shogun Audio, the UK bass and techno DJ gives us a glimpse into the fresh tirade of bass-weight he’s soon to unleash upon us!
The RinseFM DJ has teamed up with two of the island’s finest spitters, namely Manchester lad Skittles and Foreign Beggars’ Metropolis, to create two hefty hybrid tracks in ‘Problem’ and ‘The Edge’.
A-side ‘Problem’ opens with a sweeping cinematic-style intro before descending into a ferocious mix of hip hop, grime and D&B. Skittles rapid-fire vocals serve to intensify the overall formidable feeling of the track with lyrics like “if you want to eat then you better beg”. Throughout ‘Problem’ Icicle introduces a compelling blend of bass influences: honouring the atmospheric leanings of UK bass as well as its deeply-embedded cultural adoption of heavy sub-bass and propulsive drum work.
On B-side ‘The Edge’ Icicle launches straight into strict D&B territory with heavy, syncopated tech beats landing hard amidst distorted mids. Featuring a slight vocal feature Metropolis, for the most part the tune is really an instrumental D&B track with some audible grime/garage influences thrown in for good measure.
All in all, a massive single release from Icicle. Two fine-as-hell bass music productions, featuring two fine-as-hell spitters, and our appetites have been sufficiently whet for the album!
