Following the release of singles ‘Show Me’ and ‘?ugeez Or Not / 138 Trek’ on Rinse earlier this year, the eminent DJ Zinc comes forward with a new EP entitled ‘Structures’.
The first offering in four years to be dropped on the producer’s Bingo Bass imprint, the EP spans the depths of UK bass music with flecks of house, electro, techno, breaks and jungle all making an appearance on the release. Shot through with Zinc’s signature club-storming hooks and basslines, ‘Structures’ offers up a selection of club bangers sure to set any dance alight.
On ‘After Time’ Zinc constructs a perfectly murky underground rave tune, with swinging 4/4 rhythms accompanied by growling mids. winding organ riffs and arresting vocals. ‘Boppa’ continues to take things in a dark direction with a brazen bass synth driving things forward under breaks rhythms and spiralling melodics, leading up to a climactic series of drops. ‘Emanate’ maintains the pressure with LFO patterns and flashing snare fills, accompanied by a rising synth-swapping motif that gets its hooks in to you pretty early on. This is definitely one you want to hear out on a club sound system, it will destroy the dance!
‘If You’ melds a peak-time synth and vocal combo together with 8-bit synths, followed by a collaboration between Zinc and fellow d&b legend Marky, ‘Double’ creeps in behind a sunken kick and sweeping pads, before mangled signals give way to a dark and brooding groove. Closing on ‘Runouts’, a frantic and high-energy track, Zinc brings the EP to a close with darting melodies and one-shots scattered over a tough and technical electro rhythm.
‘Structures’ is a varied EP that picks and chooses influence from a range of genres. Zinc’s trademark hooks and basslines continue to serve as the driving force of his productions whilst he has fun playing about with pretty much everything else. Rather than having a pre-meditated essence of continuity, ‘Structures’ feels more like an explosion of ideas with each track surprising you as Zinc introduces something new and different from the last.
