Alex Roque – ‘Soul Train’ EP

Whobear Records top dog Alex Roque is one of the most prolific producers around, with releases on all kinds of labels from Suma Records to King Street Sounds and now Spanish-based Defined Records.

The ‘Soul Train’ EP departs on Friday and represents Roque’s debut on the imprint. Roque steps up with three different versions of the title track, the original with ‘Funky’ and ‘Dub’ mixes thrown in to the package.

The original is a raw, energetic groove but is let down slightly by a little cheese factor in the vocal sampling. Think Fatboy Slim’s ‘Renegade Master’ or Bomfunk MCs-style hip hop chops and you’re not too far from the kind of MC licks supplied here, albeit over a driving house bassline.

The Funky edit isn’t particularly funky but again the thick and fast low end carries it and there’s extra work done in the higher frequencies, adding something worthwhile to the deep and moving drops. All the evidence collected from the first two tracks points to only one conclusion – that any form of instrumental would be well worth a look. Thankfully the dub version swoops in to take all that promise and potential and turn it into a dancefloor-ready cut of a high standard, check your sample below.
